about chicón

San Isidro de Chicón is a community just northeast of Urubamba, the largest town in the Sacred Valley, and is a popular site for hiking thanks to its forests, valleys, waterfalls, and one glacier-topped mountain. A former hacienda (large plantation), Chicón is now called home by about 200 families, many of whose roots in the community go back generations. The women of Ricchariy Warmi gather every Monday and Friday in front of the community center, which also houses a health post, a mechanic’s workshop, and the biweekly meetings of the youth group led by ProWorld volunteers.
